Purebred horse in need of Rehab-- Thanks Sandy for taking him to Maine (Gilmanton)
Original info:

If you can handle a 6 yr old purebred spanish horse who is a pride cut gelding and who has arthritis in his ankle, he could be yours. He is a VERY expensive animal and given the right care and training, might be worth something, or he could just be an extremely beautiful piece of yard art. Free to excellent home only-- you must know horses and lameness issues.
Update:
He has gone to 35 acres in Maine. Lucky boy and lucky new owners!!!

I don't know a whole lot at this point but NFL (New FOund LADy) was found today in our pasture. From what we can tell she bledd out during a mis-carriage. The vet should be out later today to confirm this. I want to thank everyone that has helped spread the word and put up fliers for both me and the mare's owner Suzette. I need to ask one more favor of spreading the word that the search is over. Thank you very much. PLEASE any emails of condolences be sent to Suzette livng4jesus@gmail.com she can use all the support she can get.

Subject: [BHFER] Future flymask models...Aaleyah Belle and Buttercup

Aaleyah's nose looks better today.  She hasn't dinged it and opened up the wound again - yet.  I think the flymask is helping to prevent that.  What's really nice is that it is keeping dirt and bugs out of it.

Hold still Aaleyah!  Let me figure out how to
take your mask off so you can take mine off!

Subject: Monday Update

Good Evening Everyone,

I first want to start by letting you know that it will be a few weeks before I will have any pictures to send in the updates L Little Miss Buttercup picked the camera up today and shook it with her mouth, then launched it like a little rocket onto the concrete. She looks so cute in this picture – it’s a good thing we got to see it before the camera went flying!

This afternoon, Aaleyah tore most of her stitches. She has 3 (of 7) that are still in. Dr. Ryan was called immediately and is concerned. He will be out first thing in the morning, but because there is so little skin on the nose, it’s likely that it cannot be restitched. He would have to trim back the skin, and it was already trimmed back for the stitches that came out. He is also concerned, as is Theresa, that Aaleyah wasn’t put on Naxcel or some other antibiotic after the surgery. The results will be in tomorrow from the lab to determine what type of infection it is and which antibiotic should be used to treat it. Let’s just hope and pray that the remaining 2 on top and 1 below remain until they are supposed to come out. They should remain for 10-14 days after the surgery. Theresa is feeding  Aaleyah every 2 hours tonight, and through the morning until the vet arrives. We are hoping that by doing this she will not try to nurse and pull any more stitches. Please, pray for Aaleyah and light some more candles. Look at how nicely Momma Sue is starting to fill out!

Ruby had some Banamine tonight. She has a huge knot on her chest, so Dr. Ryan will see her tomorrow, too. She has pink skin and sunburns easily. She also gets allergies in the summer that cause her to itch. We have several horses that need Coggins (at $30 each).

Kid’s rain rot is so bad he will likely need antibiotics. Theresa said it is the worst case she has ever seen – that’s pretty bad. Dr. Ryan will see Kid tomorrow.

The farrier will also be out tomorrow. It’s going to be a busy day!!!

THE RAFFLE IS STILL OPEN, SO PLEASE GET YOUR TICKETS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!!!!! http://www.beautysequinerescue.org/AB_Raffle0708.htm THE FUNDS WILL COME IN HANDY TOMORROW. AND DON’T FORGET THOSE BEAUTIFUL NOTE CARDS!!!! http://www.beautysequinerescue.org/NoteCards.htm

If you have been thinking about becoming an angel, now is the time! Ruby, Kid, and Sparky all need angels. Thank you everyone. Please continue to pray for all of our horses (and to give Theresa the strength she needs).

Sincerely,

Anne Boris

Subject: [BHFER] The doctor was there...
Dr. Ryan Meeks has been to the farm and we also have the results from
the lab on her infections. She has 2 infections, one is strep. She
will begin her oral antibiotics this afternoon. The prescription she
will be on is not carried on the truck, so it has to come from the
doctor¡¦s office directly. She is on oral as opposed to inject able
because she does not do well with a catheter in, and if we were to
give her 2 shots each day she would resent humans. So we felt the
best choice is the oral antibiotics.
There is nothing that can be done for the lost stitches. Dr. Ryan
stated that she may develop proud flesh, which would leave a scar but
that would not cause any ill effects. Aaleyah can be turned out
around the barn, but she should not run around or get excited. With
time, she will be fine but please continue to pray for her.
Kid is also on antibiotics for the rain rot. Ruby is on dexamethasone
for her itching.
If there is any change in Aaleyah¡¦s condition, we will update you as
early as possible. Thank you all for caring fº

Subject: Good Morning Update

Good morning! The day is just beginning, so there isn’t much exciting to tell. Aaleyah took her medicine like a good girl last night. Theresa mixed it with yogurt to hide the taste. She said Aaleyah looked at her as if to say “Hmm, I’m not sure if I like it or not, but it’s not all that bad!” This morning her medicine was put in her milk and she drank it right up. That is a much easier way to get it into her. And she never spills a drop of her milk!

Her fly mask has not arrived yet, so Theresa contacted the company this morning and asked if can be shipped overnight. She really needs it right away. Also, we are hoping that in the next few days we can have Dr. Ryan repair her hernia. It seems to have gotten larger of the last 2 days, and it really needs to be taken care of sooner, rather than later.

Everyone else is doing well this morning. J

If anyone would like a printable flyer for the raffle to post at your local feed store, or perhaps give to a co-worker, please let me know and I will forward it to you. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Anne Boris

Sunday Update on the Girls

Just a quick update on the girls and Momma Sue.

It's hot - very hot today!  Momma Sue likes to stay under the sprinkler but decided she would share with Buttercup for little bits of time.

Momma doesn't hesitate to let Buttercup know when her time is up either!

Aaleyah doesn't care for the water but that may be a good thing until we get her infections cleared up.  She stays in front of the fan while Momma and Buttercup take turns at the sprinkler.

You can see a little discharge in her left nostril.  She still likes to put anything and everything in her mouth.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Theresa

Thank you for all your concern.  God Bless all of you and all you do.

I just spoke with the woman with the Arabs, and she has found them all homes. Thank goodness!! She is quite relieved. Apparently two are stallions that barely wear halters, and the other is a 25 year old mare in poor condition.

Spokane CL - Shire X baby and Shire Mare

Good Morning FOB's!! Update for everyone regarding these kind souls. I have secured them. There are three in total. The Shire mare, said to be 12yrs old with colt 2 weeks old, and a 2 yr old belgium cross stud colt. I will be transporting them this weekend to my home. It would be sooner, but this is the earliest the owner can be home to meet me. This will take two trips, but they will be safe!! The young lady that owns them has married, and is moving to Oklahoma for a job and her husband. She is leaving Tuesday (July 15) early morning, and her parents have said that any horse she leaves behind will be put down. So this is an emergency to get them out of there NOW! All that I know of the mares weight is what I have seen in the pics on CL. When I get them here, I am going to be evaluating, having vet and farrier care done, and starting them on a feeding program as well as working with the foal that has not been handled.... I will get some new pics of them to share with you all when I get them home and settled in.

I feel safe to say that I will be rehoming them upon knowing more about them and having their health care looked after. Getting them safely out and home is the number one priority. God Bless everyone and all that the FOB's do!!

Aaleyah Update; Friday Jul 11th

I apologize for just getting to post an update today - it's been busy here and I threw my back out this afternoon pouring Aaleyah's milk - how frustrating!

Aaleyah did very well for her surgery yesterday.  They were late getting started and we didn’t get back home until around 5 pm.  She had 2 infections – one from the pin and wire (both removed yesterday) and one from another implant that is still intact.  She will be started on the appropriate antibiotic on Tuesday after results from the culture are back.  We will be praying the antibiotics work but if not, she will have to have this other implant removed which is a bit more complicated then what was done yesterday.

Today, Aaleyah is doing very well.  The lump on her nose is smaller and it will continue to decrease in size over time.  Her new stitches are doing ok.  Her appetite is great and when she first went out this morning it was great to see her do her little what I call "cricket" dance.  She played with Buttercup for a little before tiring out and napping.  Here are a few pictures.  She is still doing the "point the nose in the air" thing but not nearly as much.

This picture was taken after settling in back at the rescue yesterday.

Here is Aaleyah and Momma Sue saying good morning to everyone.

Aaleyah doing her "cricket" dance.

Aaleyah sporting her flymask - we couldn't find pink.  We're going to modify it a little to provide coverage all the way down her nose to where the stitches are.

Thanks everyone for caring about, and helping, this little girl that is so easy to love.   Her personality is so vibrant - you can't help but to smile at her.

Theresa

!!!!!!!!!THEY ARE HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            Lou Lou & Zeus

Hello everyone... been a VERY long day... here is how it went...

Got hooked up and headed out about 8:30 this morning... (kids didnt want to get up lol "come on mom its summer")

truck did really well... and showed no signs of any issues today... I'm thinking all the prayers were answered on that one!!!

Got up there around 1:45pm... Met Ginna (owner) at the truck stop up the road from her house... from there I followed her... BOTH of the Mules were in a small stock trailer w/ hanging water buckets and a small fan on the outside of the trailer, they took off their halters and leads and the gelding has sores from his being so tight :( ... I'm not sure what to think of this as they said they were in the trailer ALL NIGHT AND DAY!!! Her husband stated that he didnt think she could load them alone and he was on call and may end up having to go to work. This is not where they were staying so not sure why/if/what they are hiding?

Well the gelding kicks... (or so she said once we were there) and they had no halters on so we had to get them on somehow... after a few attempts by her husband and always getting the rear end of the gelding he gave up... So we closed them in the front of the stock trailer just long enough to open the back gate and back my trailer up to his, it took some manuvering but we got them in and in their slants... took a few min to get their halters on thru the windows but it was done :) ... I did notice when we first got there that the gelding has a swollen back right ankle, with no obvious limp and since he is so spooky I didnt get a good look at it other then from a standing view... the molly looks great all around. After all this we looked at Angel the Arabian mare (read below)... Did not see "Amy Dick" anywhere. We got home about 8:30pm. My husband came out and brought the camera so we could grab some pics before it got too dark. They both unloaded fairly well. My husband looked at their teeth and calls them both between 2 and 3yrs old.

Now... Coggins on both are out of Kentucky, the owner listed on the gelding is out of "Paris, Tennessee"... (if you would like to know further info please email... I wont post his name on the forum) the "sale" tag # was 576 on a yellow sticker stuck to the coggins and below that sticker is another sticker in orange with the #554 (one number off from the mollys), however in the "name" box it says 489 ... so I'm assuming thats ANOTHER sale???? It looks as though they got them both at the same time and tried to resell him is my only guess??? the date on the coggins is 1/25/08. And he is listed as an "A" for age (adult I'm thinking??) My grandson has been calling him "Zeus" all day ... so thats gonna stick in my head now ;), (they said they had no name for him and they didnt even know what Amy had called him online) ... Oh and reason for test is "sale". He is a challenge to lead and trys to go where he wants when he wants but seems to try to listen well and with exception to a few nips when my hands got to close to his mouth he is gentle but very skiddish.

The mollys coggins was pulled on 1/3/08. Reason for coggins says "show". however the "sale" sticker # is 553. The owner is out of "Morehead, Kentucky". listed age is 2. and name is "Lou". We are calling her "Lou Lou". She does not lead and will only follow the gelding. She too nips at your hands but my husband just used the deep voiced "aah aah" and she quit and never tried again. She has a very kind eye and I dont think she means any harm to anyone but she is more skiddish then Zeus.

We did also pick up the 12yr old arabian/paint mare, "Angel". After watching the way the young boy (that I had been told she belonged to) was treating her I just couldnt leave her there. She has SEVERE sun burn on her nose and eyes and he was dead set on getting the "scabs off cuz they are gross to look at" ... mind you after a bit of picking, head throwing and her bleeding I had to stop him. I know she wasnt mine but I couldnt stand there and watch it. Some of the story the boy was telling me and then the mother later didnt really match up. He rode her up with a halter and lead and asked if I wanted him to saddle and ride her and I said No... It was SOOOO hot and just the halter and bareback ride she was dripping sweat. Anyhow to make a long story short we gave $400 for the mare. I wasnt leaving her there. She is ribby and has a large belly. But over all she is in ok shape. Very sweet girl. Her coggins was pulled on 6/3/08 and is in the boys name.

I will have to borrow my girlfriends scanner to get the receipts on fuel (total $241) and so forth scanned (mine is hating me and throwing a temper tantrum)

I do have pics that I took of them just as the Mules got off the trailer... My son had already taken Angel to the field so her pics are there. Can anyone post them for me???

I'm EXHAUSTED so I wont be online that late tonight... I'm hitting the hay early!!!

God Bless EVERYONE who has helped... I'm just grateful they are HOME!!!!

Erica

Original info:

This is a link to 2 mules who are for sale for $200 a piece.  They are listed by the same owner that had Tendresse (who was thankfully saved by you guys).

http://www.equinehits.com/horses-for-sale/horse-214326

The seller has these mules posted on several sites.  Sometimes it is stated that they belong to her, sometimes they belong to a neighbor, sometimes a friend.  I don't know who they belong to, but they don't seem to be in the best of circumstances.  Le Anne stated that her husband didn't see any mules on the property when he picked Tendresse up.   However, the ad for the mules is not new.  It has been updated with a new auction date.  Previously, the owner stated they would go to auction on 6/20/08, the same auction date set for Tendresse.  So, indirectly, you guys have already extended their deadline since the seller had to be home to sell Tendresse and not at an auction.

I don't know if it would be wise for me to contact this seller again but I will if it is necessary.  I have no experience with mules, but will help by putting up the first $30 towards saving them.  Just let me know where to mail it... :)

Manager of horse rescue facility sentenced to prison in cruelty case

9:35 AM Tue, Jul 01, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)
Posted by: PE News

An Antelope Valley horse rescue manager has pleaded no contest to two felony counts of animal cruelty.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office says Janis Damiani was sentenced to two years and eight months in state prison after entering the plea Monday.

Damiani initially pleaded not guilty to 30 counts of animal cruelty on June 18. By pleading no contest, prosecutors agreed to dismiss 28 counts against her.

Prosecutors say the remaining two counts involve a horse and dog that had to be euthanized after being removed from the Equus Sanctuary in Pearblossom during a raid by animal control officers in early June.

About 100 horses were taken off the property and transferred to other facilities.

Menan, Idaho Horses Chronology Spring/Summer 2008

Early April…I received a call from reporter, Kris Keach, at Channel 3 TV in Idaho Falls, ID and was told the following:

-that dozens of horses in Menan, Idaho (3745 E 800 N)belonging to a friend of the sheriff (Sheriff Blair Olsen of Jefferson County, ID) were in poor shape and that every winter the horses were half starved. Kris then proceeded to tell me that his boss was also a friend of Olsen's and was blocking the investigation…and he told me that if I could get pictures that he would get them on TV. (This was blocked as Kris told me that his boss was a friend of the Sheirff's.)  Ch 3 has a program where they investigate neighborhood situations. Kris gave me the name of a neighbor, Monica Lifton of Menan who called in the complaint to Ch 3.

I was also told by Kris, and later when I spoke with Monica, that the neighbors had called in and complained to the sheriff's dept and that nothing was being done. The neighbors were tired of seeing the horses underfed and stunted year after year.

28th April at noontime, I drove to Menan and took pictures from the roadway. The pictures will show the fence between the horses and me....and I posted them on ABF. There were approximately 30-40 with many "ribby" horses and several very poor. (I took pictures and later sent them to CH 3…never heard a word from them.)

From Menan, I drove directly to the Sheriff's Dept, to file a complaint against the owner.  My attempt to file charges was denied and I was told the Sheriff was handling the situation and he didn't feel they needed vet care. Several days later, I met with the Prosecutor and told her that I denied the opportunitiy to file charges. She too said that the Sheriff was handling the matter.

Since the sheriff's dept was blocking attempts to help the horses, I sent the pictures I took to the State Vet in our locality…Dr. Tom Williams.  The next morning after receipt of the pictures, Dr. Williams went to examine the horses with Capt Poole of the Jeff Co. SDept.

He called me that afternoon and said that he had put the horses under the care of the local vet.  He did not tell me who the local vet was at the time BUT I later found out when the vet's office called me and told me that one load of horses had been brought to their clinic and the body scores were 2.5, 3s, and not many made a 4 on the Henneke Scale. Another load of young horses also were taken to the vet and were so "wild" that they had to treat them in the trailer.  Also, I was told that some horses had to come back for a check up. The horses were wormed and teeth checked.

1 May 08, deputy came to my home with a trespassing citation for me to sign.   While taking pictures of the horses I had to drive down a gravel road to ask the neighbors if I could take pictures from their property. As the house was closed up, I assumed these neighbors were not there and turned and drove back to the paved road stopping to take pictures of the 2.5 body score horse by the fence. These are the people charging me with trespassing for they say their property was posted. (There are still no charges filed against the owner of the horses.)

My attorney has driven to Menan and said that there are no "No Trespassing" signs as Idaho Codes say their must be...instead, there is a "Keep Out" sign posted on a fence pasture and another on a corner post…so it is very ambiguous…it appears to refer to the pasture. Truthfully, I didn't see them.

June 1st… I went to my "arraignment" and pled "not guilty" per instructions from attorney.

June 30… my attorney and I attended the pretrial and I was asked to plead guilty to "trespassing" with a fine of $150 and 10 days "discretionary" jail time.

(I am not pleading guilty to something I didn't do…the property was not posted and there was no intent to "trespass"…I went to ask for permission to take pictures.)

So, I have opted for a jury trial. My attorney will continue to discuss with the prosecutor about dropping the charges which I seriously doubt as the Sheriff called me after Christmas of this past year and told me to but out of the animal welfare business in his county. He has a personal vendetta against me and has stated to others that I have worn out my welcome in the county.  I am documenting cases dating back to 2002 where the Sheriff did not enforce the ID codes in regards to animal welfare and left animals in deplorable conditions, starving, freezing, abandoned without responding.  His department routinely tells residents to "shoot it".

So, it's important that a stand be made for the animals in Jefferson County, ID.  I feel from his phone call and comments to others that he is trying to "scare me off"…and that leaves no one to "speak for the animals".

We are looking at a trial in August. I need assistance with attorney's fees if any of you are able and willing to help. If funds are contributed to HSUV, they are tax deductible… designate them Legal Defense Fund. Our Treasurer will see that they directed to the attorney. I have already paid him $1000.

Paypal  celliottt@yahoo.com (celliottt @ yahoo.com) and I will see that they are directed to HSUV for legal defense.

Thank you so much.  I strongly believe that if we can make these guys sit up and take notice, other nearby localities will follow suit in regards to their attitude towards animal welfare.

Thank you for your help and I certainly appreciate all the phone calls, emails, and faxes to support these horses! They wouldn't have received vet care without the pressure.

BTW, I have the state vet's report dated 19 June 08 that says all horses have improved by one body score point except the 2.5 mare and she seemed in good spirits.  There is NOW plenty of food on the premises!

Momma Sue and the babies are doing well.  The days are hot and humid but they are tolerating it.  Momma Sue looks forward to her sprinkler everyday – she loves water.   The girls are starting to enjoy it too.  They’re a mess – a handful!   Both of them are always into something but Momma Sue keeps them both in line.

When Momma Sue arrived at BH several weeks ago she was weak in her right rear leg / hip area – she rested her right leg a lot.  She would let us work on all of her feet but that one.  This past Friday we had Dr. Das come out to evaluate her and treat her with chiropractic and acupuncture.  Momma Sue had so many sore areas – without putting much weight on that back leg and compensating with the other 3 – it makes the whole body out of sorts.  The chiropractic part went pretty good.  Dr. Das couldn’t do much with her bad leg and during the acupuncture there were many trigger spots that were just too reactive and Dr. Das had to pass over those spots.  Momma Sue did receive B12 and TCM.

After the treatment Momma Sue appeared relieved and put more weight on the bad leg.  Dr. Das said it could be an old injury, it could have happened during birthing of Aaleyah or when she was bred - there are many things that could have happened.  The rest of the day she was better on that leg until late evening when she laid down with Aaleyah.  We went to tuck everyone in for the night and she did not want to get up.  To help motivate her to get up - we got Aaleyah up and put her in their “suite.”   Momma Sue didn’t budge even though Aaleyah was out of sight.  Then we got Buttercup up and as we were leading to her to her stall Momma Sue whinnied and did get up but she was obviously weak on that side.  Today she is not putting much weight on it again and she rests it a lot.  Dr. Das recommends Momma Sue have two more treatments – the first being no later then in the next 2 weeks.  Each treatment is $125.

The girls have become such good friends.  I’m glad they have each other and that they both have Momma Sue.  They are growing so fast.  They run and play and have a blast.   The only time we put the muzzle on Aaleyah now is at night time.  Buttercup’s hernia repair has almost completely healed.

Yesterday was “work day” at the farm and some FOB’s and friends came to help do some much need work.  The arena only had 2 boards on it and was unsafe for the babies.   On overcast days we’d like to put them there with Momma Sue – they’d have more room to run and play.  Yesterday, one team (of all women!) put up the 3rd row of boards (except on the 4 curved corners).  As soon as hubby gets time he’ll put up the rest.  Another team (all men) put up a 2nd fence (electric tape) down along the main road to make a double row fence.  I’m always afraid a car will come crashing through the fence (there is a straight stretch in the road and folks like to race there) and the horses will get out.  Hubby is finishing that up today.  A 3rd team moved some sand around to fill and pack holes and a 4th team pulled weeds.  It was a very, very good day and we appreciate very much all the hard work from everyone that attended.

One of our biggest projects now is to build a shelter in one of our 3 acre paddocks for Momma Sue and the babies.  There are no trees or shelter in that paddock.  Horses in our main paddock have access to it because there is good grass there but the gate stays open so they can come up to the shelter if they want to.  One of our volunteers found a construction company that is willing to donate the labor to put up a 24 x 24 shelter but we need materials.  We’ll be conducting more fundraisers and visiting with different stores to try to have some materials donated.  We had our first donation this past week made IHO one of our very hard working volunteers.  This donation is designated to pay for a window.  Once the shelter is built there will be a plaque put up with names engraved of those that donate to the shelter.  If anyone would like to donate IHO or IMO of a loved one please let us know – this info will be engraved on the plaque.

Two recent rescues that we worked with HfH to help out of a bad situation left today.  One is going to SC for adoption and the other will be staying with HfH for awhile.  The one staying is very thin and needs time for rehab.  Unfortunately, she has pink skin and we have no shade – just mention the word “sun” around her and she’d get burned - even though she stayed in a stall during the day and be turned out at night.   She is much happier turned out and the place she is at now has a lot of shade trees and the folks there are very capable of finishing her rehab.  She is a beautiful TWH.   Oh, we had a rescue kitty arrive today.  Her name is Isabel and she’s a sweetie.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the raffle and to those that donated or helped in some way to raise funds for Momma Sue and Aaleyah’s vet bills.  We’d also thank all of those that helped at “work day” yesterday and to the donors that provided lunch for all of us.

We will be publishing a list of horses here in the next day or so and what their angel needs are for the month of July.  We will also be conducting another fund raiser to help with materials for the much needed shelter and funds to have Momma Sue treated by the holistic vet.  Also, the golf cart broke yesterday and now that must go in the shop to be repaired – the golf cart is an extremely valuable tool here on almost 18 acres.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy weekend!

Sincerely,

Theresa

This is from the ABR forum for the filly that was due to be euthed today due to a heart murmur.

Ok, I am so very happy to announce that Olie will be going to Freedom Hills Horse Rescue in MD. They are closer to where she is located and Wendy and I made the decision it would be best if she did not have to travel so far. I received a call from Freedom Hills right after I made the last post and the decision was made. Anyone who is interested in helping support Olie once she gets to her new home can visist Freedom Hills website for donation options. www.freedomhillrescue.org They would really appreciate any help.

The wonderful people at Freedom Hills will be picking her up on Sunday and she already has a yearling pasture mate waiting for her there to play with. I think this is the best ending we could have asked for and I have all of you to thank for it.. without all the call and emails of offers to help we would not have been able to find her such a great place to go. I can't wait to one day visit Freedom Hills and meet this girl in person.

Thank you again...

EQUUS SANCTUARY HORSES - Update

http://forums.prospero.com/AlexBrown/messages?msg=25748.1

During the last couple of weeks I have been speaking with the officers in charge of the Equus Sanctuary horses.

The day after the horses were seized, I made a call to Purina Mills Corporate office in St Louis, MI, seeking donations of grain.

Purina Mills has generously donated 2 tons of Equine Senior, (80 x 50lbs bags). The coupons were sent to the closest feed store.

On Monday I received call from AC officer, Rachael with updates, and she shared there was a mare with a month foal at her side. A beautiful colt. I called Purina Mills again, and asked if they could also donate feed for the mare and foal. Again they did not hesitate and called 5 bags of Omelene 400 to help feed this precious mare and her newborn colt.

Here is what I can tell you:

Herd consists of 80 in total

10 stallions (very gentle). Geldings will be performed once they have gained more weight.

3 pregnant mares

Mare with 1 month old colt at her side. Both are doing well.

Donkies, ponies (unsure of exact number)

Several Tattooed TB's (I should get numbers soon)

12 yr old TB gelding, born on the property with a congenital hoof deformity. He is doing well.

The majority are Arabs

Age 12-25 yrs.

All horses have had teeth floated, feet done, worming, shots and full vet assessment.

9 horses remain at the animal shelter and monitored by county equine vet. They are the worse of the herd suffering with infections, injuries and other medical issues that require closer attention. They are doing well.

The 71 remaining are at the undisclosed location and are visited every day by equine vet and ac officers, evaluated and checked for any signs of colic etc.

Sadly 20 horses had to be euthanized, plus a tattooed approx 25 yr old TB gelding had to be euthanized couple of days ago, (lip number not recorded)

LACAC are committed to the continuing care of this herd until such time as they are healthy to be placed into pre-approved adopted homes. They will not go through an auction.

They desperately need help with donations. Cost is $2000/day.

Current Feed needs:

Equine senior (currently using 2 x 50lb/bag per day, this will increase within lines of re feeding program)

20 bales of Alfalfa/day

Alfalfa Hay pellets

Omelene 400

Donations will not be handled by SHI. In order to save time, donations can be sent directly to the non profit foundation, that is part of Los Angeles County Animal Control.

I will have the address tomorrow and will post.

I know many have been asking for updates on these horses, and wanted to post everything I know to date.

I am also waiting for photos.

Thanks

Deb..:)

Menan, Idaho Horse Update

http://forums.prospero.com/AlexBrown/messages?msg=25747.1

6/26/08 Well, just to let all know (and we had tremendous support on this issue) that I have received a copy of the USDA State Vet's report about these 30-40 horses.  After I sent the pix to the local State Vet on 4/28, he promptly (next morning) went out to examine the horses and put them under the care of a local vet.

Within a week or so, I received a call from the attending vet's office. The horses were trailored to his clinic and the body scores went from a low of 2.5 to not many 4s. Some had to return in two weeks.  They were examined and some were so wild that they could not be removed from the trailor...wormed and teeth checked. The old mare, chestnut/sorrel, had a body score of 2.5...she's about 30.  (So, she needs more care at the age, just as we will!)

A month later the state vet went out again and ascertained that all horses had improved in condition by 1 point except for the old mare and she seemed lively and alert for her age. So...the horses are better off for it. AND the owner knows that everybody is watching.

After next Monday, 6/30, I will update all on my situation that developed from getting these pix.  :)   More fun!

Andi

Subject: Update :)

Hi Everyone,

No news is good news! I’m sorry I haven’t sent out an update in the last few days, but everyone is doing great! The babies play more in the evenings when it is a bit cooler. It has been so hot during the day! The vet is coming tomorrow and we will ask him to take a look at Aaleyah again – just as a precaution before we completely remove the muzzle. She has been allowed to go for little bit here and there without the muzzle, but she still wears it most of the time. We also want him to check Buttercup’s hernia repair. It looks like it is doing okay – yucky, but okay. So, I will put out an update tomorrow night letting everyone know what the doctor says J

Sincerely,

Anne Boris

Subject: Friday Update

Good Evening Everyone,

I’m sorry I didn’t send out an update last night, but things have been going well so there wasn’t much to tell J We did have some visitors to the rescue today, and they have offered their time to volunteer.  Yahoo!!!!!! Mary was at the rescue in the morning. In the afternoon, another couple came. On their tour of the farm, Magic actually took a treat for the husband!! That is a HUGE step for him because he is so fearful of men. From what Theresa said, they know the Parelli Games and will be coming out so they can play with Magic. He needs to become familiar with more people, and this is a perfect opportunity.

Ola came this afternoon and did Kiwi’s other back foot. When she trimmed her before, Kiwi was not comfortable standing on the other foot, so we gave it a few days and she was fine today. She is gaining weight and her personality is coming out. She feels so much better!

The visitors today fell in love with Buttercup and Aaleyah. They really loved Aaleyah’s stand up tall, ears forward, “look at me!” personality. I can hardly wait to go to the rescue next week to see how big she and Buttercup are.

Theresa has some pictures from today, but her computer is acting up AGAIN so she couldn’t send them tonight.

In the last email, I incorrectly stated that the raffle ends tomorrow, but it ends NEXT Saturday, the 28th. The eBay items are still selling, so please check them out if you need any horsey items. J

Sincerely,

Anne Boris

Meadow Haven News, Summer 08

Hello Friends!

We have had a busy time here with horse placement. We now have a new website:

www.meadowhavenrescue.com.

Although I had fully intended to pull back from the rescue, the calls continue to come and the horses continue to need placement. We have worked with several other organizations to get them placed and to assist in picking some of them up. But it is hard times for many people with gas sky high and feed through the roof.

Let me introduce you to Fred ~

Fred is from a dude ranch and couldn’t keep his weight, and was surrendered to us. Hes and old boy who needs lots of pounds yet before hes back to normal. We are thankful he was not sent to auction and was given the opportunity to retire properly. He is being rehabbed in a Hondo facility.

We have added a section to our site where owners can post their horses to place them. This is NOT “for sale” horses- please don’t ask us to sell your horse for you- it is only for horses who are free. As well Iv been very busy matchmaking horses with owners...we are in a severe drought here in Medina, and do not expect a hay crop this year. Bad economic times have caused many people to need to let their horses go. I will continue placing the horses direct from the owner to their new homes (we cannot accept any more with these economic conditions and no hay). We also have permanent residents here who still need a sponsor. So if you’re looking for a horse, please fill in an application form so we can match you up! If you would like to sponsor one of our old guys, let us know!

How about this awesome fella? He was diagnosed with navicular and donated to us in June. We placed him direct from the owner at a local camp where he received proper shoeing and is already back to riding.

Many of these horses just need some R&R or shoes and they can be serviceably sound for years to come.

If you cannot take care of your horse for whatever the reason, please consider Meadow Haven Horse Rescue. We will give you a tax receipt for your animal and help find him a loving home.

If you would like to donate to help with our costs, permanent horses, vet bills and shoeing, please go on line and press the Paypal button (visa and master card) or you can send a check to:

MHHS, POB 258, Medina TX 78055.

All donations are tax deductible, staff is all volunteer and 100% of your donation goes to the horses. We are having a big Trail Ride Benefit in October 19th in Bandera, so Mark your calendars! If you can donate to our silent auction, or donate your time, let us know!
