Warnings |
|
This is information sent to me by rescues or other
concerned individuals. In most cases the person or organization
listed are considered to be a risk if an animal is adopted
into their care. |
|
Do you know someone who has been convicted of animal cruelty?
Maybe you know someone who sells horses to the slaughter houses.
Let's spread the word so that other horse owners are warned.
|
|
| Please
watch out if you are in this area and be sure to ask for identification from any person
claiming to be with a rescue group. Poor owner
and poor rescue group that the guy is claiming to work with!

Rescue group warns of
horse hoax
Brittany Bailey
Updated: 7/15/2008 12:51:05 AM Posted: 7/14/2008 11:30:46 PM
At Mike and Tracy
Merriman's Jefferson County farm, you can find just about any animal, from a donkey to a
dog and a cat. Plus, the couple has 13 horses.
"My husband has
a soft spot," Tracy Merriman said. "I think sometimes they eat better than I
do."
So Merriman was on
guard when a stranger showed up last week.
"He said, 'Well,
we just need to come out and investigate before we bring a trailer out,'" Merriman
said. "'You know, how many we're going to take, if any at all.' I said, 'not here,
you ain't.'"
Merriman says the man
claimed to be with Horse Haven, a non-profit group based in West Knoxville.
"No, I'm not
going to give up my horses, not just to anybody," she said. "I want
identification, I want proof, and he didn't have any of that, he wouldn't even tell us his
name."
The man focused in on
Sugar, a horse the Merrimans admit is skinny. But they say it's because she bred too
young.
Stephanie Solomon
agrees. She lives just up the road from the Merrimans. She also is the president of Horse
Haven.
"Horse Haven
representatives always have ID, we operate within the law, and we never try to seize
horses without law enforcement present," Solomon said.
Solomon says someone
pulled off a similar scam about a year and a half ago in Blount and Sevier counties.
Now, she's trying to
get the word out about this current scam so that no one else will get taken by this horse
hoax.
"My thoughts are
that people will get the wrong idea about what Horse Haven's trying to do and that they
will possibly, worse-case scenario would be, turn their horses over to these people, and
that would be bad 'cause I don't know where they're going," Solomon said.
If you have any
information about this hoax, you're asked to call Horse Haven at 609-4030.

Manager of horse
rescue facility sentenced to prison in cruelty case
9:35 AM Tue, Jul 01,

Posted by: PE News
An Antelope Valley
horse rescue manager has pleaded no contest to two felony counts of animal cruelty.
The Los Angeles
County District Attorney's office says Janis Damiani was sentenced to two years and eight
months in state prison after entering the plea Monday.
Damiani initially
pleaded not guilty to 30 counts of animal cruelty on June 18. By pleading no contest,
prosecutors agreed to dismiss 28 counts against her.
Prosecutors say the
remaining two counts involve a horse and dog that had to be euthanized after being removed
from the Equus Sanctuary in Pearblossom during a raid by animal control officers in early
June.
About 100 horses were
taken off the property and transferred to other facilities.
The
Associated Press
Original info:
| I am
getting mixed information on this situation. Most
are saying that this is a rescue turned hoarding situation and not all the horses are
being put down, just the ones that are not expected to make it. As more information comes in, I will post it here.
Here are a couple of
quotes from the ABR forum on the other side of this:
1. From what I've read on another board (fugly), the
original author of this e-mail is an animal hoarder herself who has had dogs removed from
her that were in horrible condition (profiled on the news at one point). The
horse "rescue" organization in question has had many issues over the
years, and animal control is evaluating and humanely euthanizing the horses that are too
sick or debilitated to attempt any type of treatment (I read that this was about 20 of the
100 horses). The rest will be moved to an undisclosed rescue facility.
2. This is the same topic a few months ago where I got
attacked on this forum and the post was closed. Equus was in the courts in Jan. with
another court date for Febr.
Animal Control had a
good case at the time, with places lined up to send them if a seizure was in the plan.
HSUS was following it with A/C.
Others got involved
and things heated up on this forum. I just wonder why this woman is allowed to still
have them after so many months. She had like 118 horses back in
January. I have been told she has had problems with A/C and her lack of care for
the horses several times in the past. They had no water back in Jan. when a/c went
out for a visit.
I certainly hope the
first post is blown out of proportion. Maybe tomorrow more news will surface.

Subject: EMERGENCY!!! Lancaster, CA--Marcia
Mayeda is murdering 105 horses RIGHT NOW
CROSS-POST AND FORWARD
EVERYWHERE!!!
Mass
murderer Marcia Mayeda and her band of bloodthirsty killers of LA
county animal control obtained an illegal warrant from a corrupt court to
raid Equus Horse Sanctuary in Juniper Hills (animal control has no right to apply for
or execute search warrants). They are there RIGHT NOW slaughtering horses--they
have already slaughtered 5 or 6 horses and thrown them in a dumpster and they will
continue to murder 99 more horses!!! They will continue to kill the old horses until all
are dead. The monsters have generators and lights, they will continue their kill fest
all day and all night.
Some of
the co-conspirators in the mass murder: Chris, George, someone with the last name Scott,
someone with the last name Rachel, and Sherry Koenig of LA county animal control all were
spotten on the premises of Equus Sanctuary today sadistically enjoying the kill fest.
There are six vets there, in vehicles that say "veterinarian", doing nothing but
killing horses. The horse-murdering sadists have been slaughtering the poor equines
at Equus since 8:00 this morning, and as horrendous
as that is, on top of it, the sadists are being paid to perpetrate the atrocity
with your tax dollars! DA investigators and swat team running around in their costumes
trying to be big shots by murdering senior citizen horses horses, like the horses were
going to shoot them or something! .
These
precious horses are all rescues and some are 30 years old. Since they were
rescued by Equus, these horses have lived their lives in rustic contentment, and
until today they have been safe in the loving care of their sanctuary and caretaker Janet.
But now their safety has been shattered, Mayeda and the rest of her thugs have invaded the
safety of the sanctuary, and because the old horses are thin--that's the way that old
animals get--Mayeda hauled poor Janet off to jail, claiming, what else? Animal
cruelty of course. The killers regard animals being old and thin as a crime
punishable by death, and imprisonment of their caretakers. The bloodthirsty killers
of LA county animal control are so blatantly out of control, so intent upon perpetrating
and escalating their mass murder of precious animals, that for today's bloodfest, they
even set up tents and have catered food--they are making a party out of mass murdering
these 105 innocent horses!
A woman
named Gail Kaye is responsible for the death of every horse on that property, that Mayeda
murders. Kaye was at the Equus Sanctuary last week, trespassing, she was
seeking to get free horses, and representing herself as an employee of LA animal
control. She wouldn't leave the property and had to be forcibly removed by the sheriff's
office. In retaliation for not obtaining free horses, she conspired with Marcia
Mayeda, Sherry Koenig and the rest of the killer crew to go out and destroy
the whole sanctuary. Kaye is there right now with her horse trailer picking out the
cream of the crop, and picking up free horses in her white ford F350 long bed pickup
truck with a horse trailer, with tape on her license plate so that no one
will know who she is, all of which is illegal and they should arrest her for
it. Kaye, along with her buddy, Mayeda, is responsible for the slaughter.
The U.S.
has now shut down and officially banned all horse slaughterhouses. But horse slaughter is alive and well, and
continually escalates, perpetrated by the sadists of LA county animal control, and
other murderous pounds. When is the slaughter going to stop, when will people demand an
end to the reign of terror by the Nazi animal controls, SPCA's, "Humane"
Societies, and other sadists who continue and keep escalating their total
victimization of innocent animals and their caretakers???
Please
contact the press, no one is out there to witness this horror being perpetrated by the
psychotic killers who will never be content until every animal in the world is dead. Also, please call the LA county DA's office at (213) 974-3512, and demand that these monstrous sadists of LA
county animal control, especially Marcia Mayeda, be stopped from continuing to perpetrate
their crimes, and be brought to justice.
Call
Linda of Equus at (818) 935-7477 cell phone.
You can also try the sanctuary office number but that may not be a working number
anymore: (530) 260-0148.
Please
call all the TV stations and demand they cover this story. Channel 4 refused, saying, oh,
well, the horses are old, so they are not bothering to even go out to cover the
slaughter! The horses need help, Equus desperately needs an attorney. Also go and see
what you can do to stop the killing, or at least to document it and bear witness, take
your cameras and video recorders. The sanctuary is located off the 14 freeway, exit at
Pearblossom, then ask one of the local businesses for directions to the sanctuary.

Unser Could Face Animal Cruelty Charges
When Bobby Unser Jr. was evicted from his home in Albuquerque¹s North
Valley, his landlord took pictures of Unser¹s animals, all of whom were
neglected. The son of multi-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser, Bobby
is in jail on drug charges.
The horses, goats and dogs seized at Unser¹s home were emaciated and hadn¹t
had hoof care or grooming in some time. A longtime friend of Unser¹s ex-wife
is currently caring for the animals, and Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren
White has been made aware of the situation.
Whether Unser will be charged with 4th degree felony animal cruelty, which
carries a sentence of up to 19 months in prison, has not been determined,
according to Animal Protection of New Mexico, however, the sheriff is avid
about prosecuting animal cruelty cases, the group says.
In another cruelty case, an Ohio judge ordered restitution of $24,363 from a
woman who neglected her horses. The woman, Diane Silbaugh, was convicted of
neglecting several horses seized from her property. She has agreed to pay
more than $24,000 restitution to the agency, Portage Animal Protective
League (PAPL), that is caring for the horses.
Silbaugh, 55, appeared before Judge John Enlow for a hearing on restitution
to be paid in the case, which has spanned nearly five months now, according
to the local newspaper, the Record-Courier.
Silbaugh is currently serving a 180-day sentence in the Portage County jail
after pleading guilty in March to several misdemeanor counts of animal
cruelty and one felony count of theft.
PAPL is still in custody of nine animals, said Sheila Vandergriff, executive
director of PAPL. As a result, the PAPL has accrued more than $35,000 in
costs for the horses, including medical treatments and food and board, said
Vandergriff. The restitution will help defray some, but not all of the costs
of rehabilitating and caring for the horses.

Danville woman faces more animal cruelty charges
By Terry Date
Staff writer
DANVILLE, N.H. A woman charged five weeks ago with
cruelty to horses now has been charged with cruelty to a dog, a Rottweiler named Boss who
is now on the mend.
Kim Damato, 45, of 272
Main St., also was charged with making a false report to law enforcement.
In the aftermath of
her arrest on the cruelty to horses charges, Damato claimed she hadn't had Boss for two
months, Danville police Chief Wade Parsons said. Police do not believe Damato's
contention, the chief said.
About two weeks ago,
police found Boss, 20 pounds underweight and with worms, in the care of an unnamed third
party.
Police traced the
animal's whereabouts by following an ad Damato had allegedly posted on the Internet, where
the dog was offered "free to a good home," Parsons said.
Danville's investigation stems from a Feb. 29 visit to
Damato's barn, where authorities found three horses without food or water, police said.
One horse was so
severely emaciated that it had to be euthanized. The other two horses were removed from
the residence and have since been returned to their owners, police said. The horses are
still being treated, but are expected to recover, police said.
Boss has been doing
well in the care of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Stratham. SPCA
animal cruelty investigator Steven Sprowl said the dog has slowly been putting on weight
the past few weeks.
"He's enjoying
life, getting three squares (meals) a day," Sprowl said.
Damato was released
on $500 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to answer to the charges in Plaistow
District Court at 8 a.m. on May 5.
If convicted, she
could face up to a year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine on each charge, police said. In
addition, Boss would be put up for adoption by the SPCA, Sprowl said.
Damato is scheduled
to face the horse cruelty charges at 8 a.m. on April 14 in Plaistow District Court.

Urgent! Alleged Hoarders' Animals Need Your Help!!!
On April
21,
Boone County Animal Control
reportedly seized dozens of animalsincluding dogs, cats, horses, and
goats, from Colin and Marie Slater of Capron,
Illinois. Two dogs were apparently in such
horrendous condition that they had to be euthanized. One of the
dogs was said to be emaciated and completely paralyzed, and the other
was allegedly suffering from tumors and severe mange.
In addition to these reported horrors, we are told
that the dogs were fed only white bread, and that the bread was fed to
them while still in plastic wrappers. We also are told that none of the
animals were provided water.
Furthermore, it was alleged that the horses
were standing in so much manure (up to 4 feet), that their heads
nearly touched the ceiling of the barn where they were kept.
Approximately 60 dogs many of whom appear
to be feral, and 15 cats remain with their
reported tormentors.
Although the Slaters have been charged with
three misdemeanor and three felony counts of cruelty to animals, there
is concern that a deal is in the works
that would allow these apparent hoarders to get at least some of their
confiscated animals back. Our concerns have only
been heightened by press reports that the judge in this case has ordered
that three of the horses who were seized be turned over to the
couple's son. This cannot be allowed to continue.
Please politely call on State's Attorney John
Hursh, and John Youngthe judge presiding over this case, to do
everything in their power to ensure that the animals who are still with
the Slaters are seized, and that the animals who were seized are not
returned to the Slaters. Urge Hursh and Young to ensure that the
couple is prohibited from having any animals for as long as possible.
Your action is vital, and time is of the
essence.
The case returns to court on May 8.

Story from the HORSE.COM TODAY:
The operator of two Washington State horse rescues will be
arraigned in King County, Wash., Superior Court on animal cruelty
charges April 29.
Dean Solomon, operator of both the former Pacific Equestrian
Center and the Washington Thoroughbred Transitional Facility, has been
charged with four counts of second degree animal cruelty, said King
County Animal Control Officer Sgt. David Morris. Each misdemeanor charge
carries penalties of up to 90 days in jail.
Authorities allege that Solomon failed to provide the horses
with adequate food, water, and sanitation. They say Solomon kept as many
as 100 horses in small, muddy pastures.
http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=11734&nID=22
Morris said Solomon was keeping horses on about 11
acres, and that the smallest herd size he had seen on the property
numbered 52 horses.
"We've had complaints about Dean for many
years," Morris said.

We just got two precious older ladies out of this place -
they are
GAUNT! This place JUST posted a solicitation for help on CraigsList -
LA - but these horses, and those still there, aren't JUST NOW out of
hay. It takes a while to starve horses this badly! We have some photos
of the two girls who are now safely out of there, and we have more
photos of at least some of the other horses. We're working with the
Inyo County authorities to step in (they indicate they've been working
on this for a while, but so far haven't intervened). Please don't fall
for that ad on CL - any help sent directly to them probably WON'T go
to help the horses!
I'm hearing not-nice things about the folks behind this. If anyone
knows people who have placed horses there, please LET THEM KNOW WHAT'S
GOING ON! We need pressure and eyes on and anything we can do to get
the authorities to intervene, and I fear we're going to need homes
(temporary or long-term) for the horses that need help.
If anyone can assist with this, please let me know - I'm trying to
coordinate various efforts, and want to try to avoid people tripping
over each other in their efforts to help.

Woman charged with mistreating horses
By Terry Date
Staff writer
DANVILLE (NH) — Police arrested a local woman on three animal cruelty
charges
after discovering horses in a barn without hay or water, one of them so
emaciated it was later euthanized.
Kim Damato, 45, of 272 Main St., was arrested Monday and released on
$500
personal recognizance bail, police Chief Wade Parsons said.
Her arrest stems from an investigation going back to Feb. 29, when
officers
responded to a report of a horse in distress at the residence, police
said.

hi brandi,
fyi
i got an email from a woman this morning that said she had her horse
advertised for sale on the horse exchange and a man named mike contacted
her..he did not want photos of her horse, he only wanted to know the
condition of the horse..offered her 300.00 more than she wanted and said
the horse would be shipped somewhere..she questioned his intentions and
was told that once he owned the horse it was not her concern.....she
emailed other folks on the list and said that others had gotten similar
emails from the guy...so either he is a killer buyer lurking on line or
he is a scam ..he said the horse would be picked up if she sold it to
him...so i think this needs to be an alert to all horse owners and those
looking to find homes for their horses.....

So
Carolina Ag Officer mistreats dozens of horses

Gotta love those politics:
February 29, 2008 4:20 AM EST
COLUMBIA, S.C. - A top South Carolina agriculture official and two of
his relatives are accused of mistreating dozens of horses here and in
Georgia, where authorities described some of the animals as looking
like someone "draped a hide over bones."
James Trexler, one of South Carolina's three assistant agriculture
commissioners, was charged this week with five counts of ill
treatment of animals. Authorities said five horses on his Hopkins
property were found without food in stalls filled with manure and mud.
Trexler, who was suspended without pay from the job he's held since
2003, was released from jail Thursday on bond. His mother, Hazelene
Trexler, and brother Terry Trexler remained behind bars because they
are considered fugitives in Georgia. Both were charged there with 30
counts of animal cruelty, authorities said.
In October, investigators found about 70 Arabian horses, including
one already dead, on about 75 acres in Jefferson County, Ga.,
sheriff's deputy Jimmy Kitchens said.
"They looked like you just draped a hide over bones," Kitchens
said. "I used to raise and train quarter horses, and I've never
seen
anything like this before. If paperwork could've been done quicker,
there'd be more charges."
None of the Trexlers could be reached for comment Thursday. No one
answered the door at James Trexler's home. No one answered the phone
at a listing for him and a message could not be left.
An attorney named by the Trexlers at the bond hearing said he was not
representing them. The phones for several Sumter businesses listed
under Terry Trexler's name had been disconnected.
The more than 20 horses seized Monday on property the mother and
younger Trexler lease in Eastover, Ga., were so malnourished that
their ribs were showing, said Lt. Chris Cowan, a Richland County,
S.C., sheriff's spokesman.
None of the horses was at optimum weight and all shared a 15-gallon
trough of water, officials said.
Kelly Graham, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals, said the organization did not find any food at
the property or hay in the pasture. "The field was just mud. There
was no grass at all," Graham said.
Hazelene Trexler, 70, is charged with 28 counts of ill treatment to
animals, and Terry Trexler, 44, faces 23 counts of ill treatment to
animals in South Carolina.
A tip led officials to investigate James Trexler's property on
Tuesday, Graham said.
All 28 horses taken from the Trexlers, including a pregnant mare, are
in veterinarian care and are expected to make full recoveries. The
Humane Society plans to seek custody of them and eventually find
people to adopt them, Graham said.
Terry Trexler also faces a kidnapping charge. Deputies said he
refused to let a Humane Society investigator leave when she came to
the pasture this month with a camera to follow up on a tip. At the
time, he claimed he was his brother, James, officials said.
Terry Trexler, a former lawyer, was disbarred by the South Carolina
Supreme Court in January 2001 after he was convicted of breach of
trust.
As director of administration for the Agriculture Department, James
Trexler oversaw budgeting and procurement, information technology,
auditing, payroll and mailing services, agency spokesman Stephen
Hudson said. He declined to comment on the charges.
James Trexler was hired under former Agriculture Commissioner Charlie
Sharpe, who resigned in 2005 after admitting he took a $10,000 bribe
to protect a cockfighting ring.

Bought a horse second hand that came from these people only to find out
they listed SOMEONE ELSES dam as my colts dam. When I eventually put him
up for sale a young girl e-mailed me to tell me her horse was not my
colts mother and she knew that for a fact because she owned the mother
before my colt was supposedly foaled. She bought that horse from the
same people my colt came from.
When I called these two I never got a return call but DID however get a
NASTY vulgar email from them about how I listed my colt for sale. They
have done this to many people. Recently they have been under
investigation for selling a FREE LEASED HANOVERIAN. They free leese
horses that are up for long time leases then sell them. OR they use the
line that they have a 4-H'er looking for a free or cheap mount. There is
NO 4-H'er, they then turn around and sell these horses.
The Maine State Cooperative extension is well aware of what is going on
and are pursuing charges. If you too have been taken by these people
PLEASE call the Gorham, Maine Police Department. They are trying to
build a large case against these people.

There is a well know scammer that is now trolling the horse
groups
in Yahoo and has even been advertising their own horse group
recently, called
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/KentuckyHorsePeople.
This person often uses aliases and will even post under her
husband's name, "John." Her name is Angela Ledcke. She also
goes
by Angie Schubart, Christa Schubart, Daniel, Saddie Backenbush, and
many, many other IDs.
This person will con and fraud with many tactics, such as acting
helpless and needing advice, being depressed and/or suicidal,
wanting to talk on the phone (easier to cry and manipulate while
telling her sad stories and lies), and more!
Now she appears to be rescue horses and offering to give them a
loving home - then selling them off.
She stormed through the work-at-home-mom's online community as a
self-proclaimed candle maker and played so many games with the
members that a site was put up in order for the onoine community to
keep up with her scams.
You can read about Angela Ledcke at:

Please be cautious when dealing with her! She has, several times,
convinced individuals to ally with her and defend her - only to ruin
their reputations and online businesses!
Sincerely,

Meat trader accused of animal cruelty keeps more horses
Last updated at 00:13am on 18th February 2008
Comments
Jamie Gray, who is under investigation for animal cruelty, is still
dealing in horses
A meat trader who is under investigation over allegations of animal
cruelty at his farm is still dealing in horses.
More than 100 emaciated horses and donkeys were discovered at Jamie
Gray's farm last month.
Animal experts who found another 32 dead animals and had to destroy
three more described the scene as an "equine Belsen".
But only weeks later, the Daily Mail has discovered that the 44-year-old
trader has brought a new batch of horses on to his farm in Hyde Heath,
Buckinghamshire, keeping them hidden in a barn away from roads and
public footpaths.
However, a member of the public spotted the horses apparently being
mistreated by Gray, and the RSPCA and numerous police officers raided
the farm last Friday.
Several horses were taken away to animal sanctuaries.
Gray buys unwanted animals for as little as £1 before transporting them
abroad for slaughter.
After last month's raid, he appeared at Aylesbury Magistrates Court on
February 4 charged with criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.
However he has not been charged with any animal welfare offences and is
still under investigation.

Free hay sought for horses
Authorities are asking the public to donate hay to help feed more than a
dozen starving horses and other farm animals found Friday on a rural
property near the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.
Mike Sanders, a captain with the Bannock County Sheriff's Office which
responded to the scene after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen,
said
area ranchers, veterinarians and animal cruelty investigators with the
group, PAWS, are assisting with the effort to keep the suffering animals
alive.
''The case itself we're still investigating,'' Sanders said. ''We're not
sure of all the issues and facts surrounding this incident. What we're
trying to do is save the animals that are still out there.''
Friday, Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said deputies had found about 34 dead or
starving animals on the property. Sanders said by Saturday at least half
of
the animals were dead, including two horses euthanized by a veterinarian
who
responded to the scene with the deputies.
Nielsen said it is likely the worst case of animal neglect in the county
during the past decade. The animals' owner, Shane Haggard, has not been
charged with a crime.
Nielsen said some of the carcasses will be tested to confirm the cause
of
death because Haggard maintains the animals are diseased.
Because Idaho has no felony animal cruelty statute, the worst penalty
Haggard could face if authorities determine wrongdoing is a misdemeanor
cruelty to animals.
Authorities, including the county prosecutors, will meet Monday to
discuss
the case.
Sanders said it is beyond Haggard's capacity to feed the suffering
animals.

this guy is in the NJ area...
He

the mare was on the killer truck.
Yes
this lovely mare is safe and sound now. The only reason was because of
the snow storm out weat. The truck was delayed and that gave the girl
the needed time to get the $$ to by the mare from the meet man. There is
a law here but they are shipping horses to Mexico and Canada. | |
